Frequently Asked Questions

What type of organization is Phi Sigma Rho?
Phi Sigma Rho is a national social sorority for women majoring in engineering and engineering technologies. Phi Sigma Rho is not a professional engineering organization that focuses on only networking and professional development. We believe in forging strong bonds of sisterhood that support our sisters through college, in their chosen careers, and throughout their lives.

Who is eligible to become a member of Phi Sigma Rho?
A potential candidate for Phi Sigma Rho must:

  1. Be a female, full-time undergraduate student enrolled at UC Irvine.
  2. Have declared a major in the Henry Samueli School of Engineering, the School of Biological Sciences, the School of Physical Sciences, or the Donald Bren School of Information & Computer Sciences. (For a detailed list of majors, please click here.)
  3. Have at least a 2.0/4.0 grade point average for the previous semester/quarter and have a minimum overall 2.0/4.0 grade point average.
A potential candidate cannot already be a member of a Panhellenic or other recognized social sorority.

What is the process for joining Phi Sigma Rho?
The process for joining Phi Sigma Rho is very similar to that of other social sororities.

First, a candidate indicates their interest in joining the sorority by attending recruitment events. These events are designed to give the candidate a chance to find out more about Phi Sigma Rho, as well as to let the candidate meet the current sisters of the sorority. Common recruitment events include information night, social events, and interviews.

At the end of recruitment, the active sisters will meet and determine which candidates will receive invitations to continue with the process of becoming a full member. These invitations are called bids. A candidate who receives a bid must then decide whether to accept the bid and become an associate member.

After a candidate accepts the bid, she must complete a set of associate requirements. Typically, this process takes one quarter. Only after completing her associate requirements is an associate member initiated as a full sister of the sorority.
