Athletics

We as a sorority participate in intramural sports throughout the academic year. We practice together, play together, and celebrate together. The Sisters take pride in keeping active and helping each other keep in shape. Participating in athletics is another way of bettering ourselves.

Some of the sports we have competed in are flag football, volleyball, dodgeball, softball, basketball, and even bowling. We were recipients of the Panhellenic Sportsmanship Award at the 2011 Greek Awards.

All smiles after our first win :)

Social

Every quarter, Phi Sigma Rho hosts an event for Sisters, Alumnae, and guests (with the exception of Fall Quarter).
Fall Quarter
Professor Dessert Social

Each year, Phi Sigma Rho teams up with Engineering Student Council to put on an event where students can meet with UCI's engineering professors. The students are able to speak with the professors in a relaxed and fun environment. The professors who attend come from a variety of engineering classes. The Professor Dessert Social is a great opportunity to get to know your favorite professor, meet the professor of a future class, or familiarize yourself with the professor's research at UCI.

Winter Quarter
Phi Sigma Rho Mocktail

Phi Sigma Rho is a dry sorority. The term "mocktail" originates from the traditional "cocktail" party, however, without alcohol. Our winter Mocktail is our semi-formal event and it is put on for the active Sisters and Alumnae. Traditionally, guests are welcome to attend Mocktail.

Spring Quarter
Orchid Ball

To bring in the end of the year, Phi Sigma Rho holds the Annual Orchid Ball formal event. Similar to that of Mocktail, the events of Orchid Ball include a three-course banquet dinner, end of the year awards, and celebration.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of organization is Phi Sigma Rho?
Phi Sigma Rho is a national social sorority for women majoring in engineering and engineering technologies. Phi Sigma Rho is not a professional engineering organization that focuses on only networking and professional development. We believe in forging strong bonds of sisterhood that support our sisters through college, in their chosen careers, and throughout their lives.

Who is eligible to become a member of Phi Sigma Rho?
A potential candidate for Phi Sigma Rho must:

  1. Be a female, full-time undergraduate student enrolled at UC Irvine.
  2. Have declared a major in the Henry Samueli School of Engineering, the School of Biological Sciences, the School of Physical Sciences, or the Donald Bren School of Information & Computer Sciences. (For a detailed list of majors, please click here.)
  3. Have at least a 2.0/4.0 grade point average for the previous semester/quarter and have a minimum overall 2.0/4.0 grade point average.
A potential candidate cannot already be a member of a Panhellenic or other recognized social sorority.

What is the process for joining Phi Sigma Rho?
The process for joining Phi Sigma Rho is very similar to that of other social sororities.

First, a candidate indicates their interest in joining the sorority by attending recruitment events. These events are designed to give the candidate a chance to find out more about Phi Sigma Rho, as well as to let the candidate meet the current sisters of the sorority. Common recruitment events include information night, social events, and interviews.

At the end of recruitment, the active sisters will meet and determine which candidates will receive invitations to continue with the process of becoming a full member. These invitations are called bids. A candidate who receives a bid must then decide whether to accept the bid and become an associate member.

After a candidate accepts the bid, she must complete a set of associate requirements. Typically, this process takes one quarter. Only after completing her associate requirements is an associate member initiated as a full sister of the sorority.
